How to Work With Loki (Prayers, Offerings, Altar Creation..)
Loki gets a bad rap for being a trickster and a bit selfish with his actions. But don’t we all have a Loki side to ourselves? One could argue that we contain all the gods and goddesses within ourselves, and some parts become more pronounced than others at times. The reason for working with Loki is to strengthen the creative trickster within us and to become more cunning.
Of course, working with deities isn’t just psychological. It’s also spiritual and metaphysical. So by praying to Loki, creating an altar and presenting offerings you can strengthen your connection with Loki and benefit from his unique powers and attributes.
But it’s not always an easy or a simple process. In this post I will share some good methods to do it and perhaps more importantly some good reasons why it can beneficial.

Reasons to work with Loki
It’s important to realize that deities can only help us through their attributes. So Loki can’t help you become better at playing an instrument for example. Because artistic expression is not in his domain.
Loki, being a cunning trickster and shapeshifter is the one you’d turn to when you require a self-transformation of some sort. Also in a situation where run of the mill actions and behaviors simply aren’t adequate for getting what you want.
Loki is chaotic so he can tap into the creative energies of darkness and bring something new and unique to the table. This is why despite of his mischievous behaviors he’s essential and irreplaceable. Without him the world would grow stale and outright boring.
At the same time, be aware that self-transformations and radical, perhaps morally dubious actions come with dangers. Working with Loki is like walking a fine line between genius and madness. So be prepared for the worst while expecting the very best when you embark on this journey!
Prayers to Loki
All deities like prayers and offerings. Loki is no different. Because he is a chaotic and amoral deity, you will need to get on his good side before you can expect his blessings to rain upon you.
Pray in the morning and at night if you have the time. Creating an altar with his various symbols is also beneficial so that you have a good space to pray and present offerings. More on that later. Here are two prayers to Loki from my own pen:
Prayer to Loki for protection
Dear Loki,
I come before you today seeking your protection and guidance. I know that you are a trickster and a master of disguise, but I also know that you have a deep understanding of the ways of the world and the forces that shape it.
I ask that you watch over me and keep me safe from harm. I know that I am not always strong or wise, and I sometimes make mistakes, but I trust in your wisdom and your ability to guide me through any challenge.
I ask that you grant me the strength and the courage to face whatever may come my way, and to always be true to myself and to my values.
I offer you my gratitude and my respect, and I thank you for all that you have done for me in the past.
May your blessings be upon me, and may I always find favor in your sight.
Amen.
Prayer to Loki to become more cunning
Dear Loki,
I come before you today seeking your guidance and your wisdom. I know that you are a master of trickery and deception, and I seek to emulate your skills and your cunning.
I ask that you grant me the ability to think on my feet and to always be one step ahead of my opponents. I ask that you give me the wit and the wisdom to outsmart those who would seek to do me harm, and to always find a way to turn their plans to my advantage.
I offer you my gratitude and my respect, and I thank you for all that you have done for me in the past.
May your blessings be upon me, and may I always find favor in your sight.
Amen.

- He loves receiving exotic spices from distant lands too.
- Additionally, he loves hearing stories about his adventures and his enemies’ misfortunes. It shows you’ve taken time to know him.
- Offerings of weapons and armor are great expressions of loyalty to the God of Mischief. A lock of hair or an article of clothing can also work.
How to create an altar to Loki
An altar is an entirely personal thing. There aren’t any official guidelines you need to follow. However, whenever an altar is created to worship or connect with a deity it’s common to include various symbolic items and offerings that the deity is associated with or enjoys. The same is true in Loki’s case.
First of all, you should find a quiet space where you can place the altar. The altar can be on a table or any other above-ground surface. It’s best if that surface can be completely dedicated as an altar. Rather than using a work desk for example.
Next, you should find items that you can place on the altar that will strengthen your connection with Loki. A few traditional items that may be included:
- Stones like black tourmaline, obsidian, and hematite for protection
- Runes like Kenaz and Perthro associated with Loki’s energy
- Items honoring Jormungandr such as skulls and serpent imagery
- Animal symbols associated with him such as cats or horses
- An image of Loki or a statue, perhaps your own creation
- Candles, in this situation they represent the fire’s potential for chaos and trickery
- Offerings like sweets, mead, wine, meat, spices
- Various types of incense
- Weapons, armor or clothing that you wish to dedicate to Loki
- A letter or prayer to Loki
Once you’re finished setting up the altar, you can say a simple invocation to consecrate it:
Loki, father of lies, and god of mischief. I invite you to my altar, that we may honor your presence in our lives. Be with us now and bless this space with your wisdom and power. Hail Loki! So mote it be!
Now the altar is ready to be used for presenting offerings, performing rites, rituals, prayers etc. Of course, you can modify the altar in the future in whichever manner you like. Just make sure that you treat it with respect and dignity that Loki deserves!
